HOCU | Painting her heritage with a brush of ‘vibrant colors’

“Alice Yumi is fascinated by the Japanese concept of “ma”— an artistic interpretation of negative space. Yumi said “ma” is not about voids, but how negative spaces have their own unique power and energy. As a Brazilian and Japanese artist and fashion designer, Yumi said she enjoys exploring ideas of identity, the body and balance in her work.
“This concept, I think, has been sort of like a great tool for me to be able to maintain my diverse interests and try to find interesting ways of joining two things that might seem like they’re in different fields,” Yumi said.
One of her art series involves using images from magazines and reimagining them as imaginary landscapes, meant to illustrate the relationship between bodies and the environment. Yumi’s own cultural identity — half Brazilian and half Japanese — has influenced a lot of her artistic work. (…)” (continues on website)

Meet the artists behind In Between: The Places We Meet at their opening event on Saturday, November 6th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lincoln Square Mall. Stay for a while, get inspired, and make your own artwork.
The artists shared the following in a recent press release:
In Between, The Places We Meet
by Alice Yumi Sinzato and Sara Grace Cofield
In Between, The Places We Meet examines the experience of landscapes, internal or external, and the interaction of those in relation to a body. There is a conversation being told about where these environments collide, becoming interwoven and acquainted, the exchange of a moment. A shared story between two bodies meeting at the edges. The something that is in between and the places where they meet.

the paper trail leads to 40north's gallery space

“The other work that stood out creatively started simply with the concept of not just paper, but pencil-and-paper. As expected and predictable as peanut butter and jelly, this pairing worked together to make Alice Yumi Sinzato’s Waterfall truly unexpected and startling. With just graphite layered on a translucent paper that was torn and cascaded in long sheets… alright, I admit: I touched it. Just along the edge, to make it ripple. Seriously, how could you not?”
